Location and Climate

Part of the San Francisco Bay area in Sonoma County, Oakmont is a Santa Rosa (CA) community. It is located in Sonoma Valley, also known as The Valley of the Moon. While Jack London popularized “Valley of the Moon” with the title of his 1913 novel, he ascribed the phrase to a Native American translation of Sonoma. The valley, carved about seven million years ago by a freshwater river system surging through volcanics, is framed between the palatial Mayacamas Mountains and Sonoma Mountains. Early Native Americans, Spain, Mexico, and a contingent of mid-19th century Americans under Col. John Fremont (who established the Bear Flag Republic) contributed to the rich history of this spectacularly scenic area.

With a population of over 150,000, Santa Rosa has a small town feel with the amenities of a large city. Travel just 52 miles south, and you'll cross the Golden Gate into San Francisco. And, you are less than 450 miles north of Los Angeles – an easy one-hour flight from Santa Rosa’s Charles M. Schulz airport. The dramatic 62 mile-long Sonoma County coastal shoreline is a scenic one-hour drive away.

A 2009 survey found that Sonoma County is the happiest and healthiest place in Califonia, and ranks 5th nationally (Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index)

The elevation of Oakmont is only 500', but the Sierra Nevada mountain range – and scenic Lake Tahoe with all its delights - are within easy driving distance.

Weather is a major Oakmont attraction. We enjoy sparkling sunny days 90 percent of the time from May through September. In our warmest months (July/August), bask in the comfort of an average 84 degree day, with the nights cooling to the low 50s. Humidity typically hovers around 40%, with an average rainfall of 32 inches. Our chilliest month is January, with highs close to 60 degrees, and lows in the upper 30s.

Sonoma County's climate, oak-studded hills and vineyards generate images of rural Provence.
